Department of Ophthalmology

Head of the Department:
Nataliia ZAVHORODNIA, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, member of international organizations: European Vitreo Retinal Society; European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), European Glaucoma Society.

 

Historical Reference

The Department was founded in 1960.

In 1992–2008, the Department was focused on the use of biologically active substances in ophthalmology and in collaboration with the Department of Medicines Technology has developed 5 medicines.

Since 2008 the Department is headed by Professor Nataliia Zavhorodnia.

During the existence of the Department 9 candidate dissertations were defended.

The Department is a unique clinic and scientific base for training ophthalmologists. Internship, Master's degree course, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies and clinical residency are open at the Department for better training.

Educational Disciplines

Fourth-year medical students, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", study Ophthalmology at the Department (internship, Master's degree course, clinical residency, postgraduate studies).

 

Educational and Methodical Work

The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, and the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. A bank of test tasks has been created for the KROK licensing exams.

According to the curriculum and the Bologna Declaration, work programs have been developed in all disciplines. Original lectures for domestic and foreign students are conducted using multimedia technologies.

Methodical recommendations for practical classes in all disciplines for domestic and foreign students of medical faculties, as well as interns have been issued. A textbook for practical classes in Ophthalmology for medical students has been published.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

  • Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of Eye and Its Auxiliary Apparatus in Patients with Concomitant General Pathology Living in Environmentally Unfavorable Conditions, Using Biologically Active Substances of Natural Origin.
  • Glaucoma and Vascular Pathology.
  • New Methods of Cataract Extraction, Optimization of Surgical Treatment of Cataracts Complicated by Ophthalmic Hypertension or Lens Subluxation.
  • Reduction of Inflammatory Reaction During Surgical Pathology and Inflammatory Diseases by Intravitreal Administration of Drugs.

Under the leadership of Professor Nataliia Zavhorodnia 1 doctoral and 14 candidate dissertations, 5 master's theses were defended so far.

Professor Nataliia Zavhorodnia published a monograph "Primary Glaucoma. New Look at Old Issues", despite that methodical recommendations "Modern Principles of Treatment of Ocular Ischemic Syndrome" were issued.

In the clinic and outpatient clinics of the city and oblast, new methods are being introduced: the use of prostaglandins (travatan, xalatan) to reduce intraocular pressure in ischemic syndrome.

 

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains close ties with research institutes of Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv and scientists of European countries.

Employees of the Department participate in international ophthalmological forums:

  • XXX Congress: European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons;
  • 10th Congress of the European Glaucoma Society;
  • 2nd World Congress of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, etc.

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Diagnostic and advisory work is carried out in the units of Zaporizhia Regional Hospital, Zaporizhia City Hospital No. 3, No. 9, Vizus LLC, ZSMPhU University Clinic.

Employees of the Department provide consultations in non-basic treatment and prevention facilities: Hospital for Disabled of the Great Patriotic War and in the University Clinic according to the schedule.

Q&A sessions are regularly held for inpatients. Employees of the Department constantly provide advisory, medical, methodological assistance to doctors of the city on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and medical examination of patients.

The Department constantly holds an event on the measurement of intraocular pressure for early detection of glaucoma — "To Read Books and Work on Computer — Save Your Eyesight!", as well as diagnosis of eye diseases in children and adults.

Within the period from October 2017 to September 2018, the employees of the Department performed 3692 different surgical interventions on the eyes.
