Historical Reference

The Department was founded in 1968. At that time the Department studied neurohumoral relations in schizophrenia and other psychoses.

From 1979 to 2009, the main scientific direction of the Department and the Course of Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology was the problem of epileptology.

Since 2011, the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, General and Medical Psychology, Narcology and Sexology has been organized, headed by Professor Vadym Chuhunov.

To train specialists at the Department there are internship, postgraduate studies, as well as thematic improvement cycles in Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, Narcology, Medical Psychology and Sexopathology.

Educational Disciplines

  • Psychiatry is studied by interns.
  • Modern Psychiatry is studied by graduate students.
  • Medical Psychology and Psychiatry and Narcology are studied by fourth-year students of Medical Faculties, majoring "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", as well as by third- and fourth-year students, majoring in "Dentistry".
  • Clinical Psychology is studied by fourth-year students, majoring in "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy".
  • Psychiatry and Narcology with Research Results Evaluation is studied by third-year students, majoring in "Laboratory Diagnostics".
  • Basics of Prevention of Smoking, Alcoholism, Substance Dependence and Drug Addiction, Basics of Psychoanalysis, Basics of Sexology and Sexopathology are studied as an optional course by fourth- and fifth-year students of Medical Faculties, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", as well as by third- and fourth-year students, majoring in "Dentistry".

 

Educational and Methodical Work

Training of students and medical cadets at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodical and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control.

A bank of test tasks has been created to prepare students for the KROK licensing exams.

Every Wednesday the Student Scientific Circle holds meetings at the Department.

According to the curriculum of the Bologna Declaration, educational programs in all disciplines were created. Original lectures are taught using multimedia technologies.

The Department prepares for publication modern academic textbooks and manuals on Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Medical Psychology.

 

Postgraduate Education

There is a constant work on postgraduate education in all psychiatric specialties: Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, Narcology, Medical Psychology, Sexopathology.

Every year interns study in the specialty "Psychiatry" at the Department. Interns in other specialties study the problems of medical psychology and combating domestic violence. During the specialization courses, students receive certificates from a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists, child psychiatrists and doctors of other specialties improve their skills in thematic improvement courses. Lecturers of the Department conduct field courses for on-site training of doctors at the request of regional health units.

  • Differential Diagnosis of Exogenous (Intoxicating) and Endogenous Acute Psychoses.
  • Issues of Clinic and Therapy of Polydrug Addictions, as Well as Non-Chemical Dependencies.
  • Methodology of Psychiatric and Psychotherapeutic Diagnosis.
  • Development of Mnestological Paradigm of Psychotherapy.
  • Introduction to Practice of Psychomethodology (Simultaneous-Mnestic Psychotherapy).

The staff of the Department defended 10 doctoral and 14 candidate dissertations so far.

 

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains close scientific ties with Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Bogomolets National Medical University (Kyiv), Institute of Neurology, Psychiatry and Narcology of the NAMS of Ukraine (Kharkiv), Kharkiv National Medical University, Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University and others.

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Diagnostic, treatment and advisory work is performed in the units of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Institution for Psychiatric Care, and in other psychoneurological and narcological institutions in the region.

There are daily concilia, clinical examinations and current consultations, receptions of specialized patients, visits to the clinical bases of the Department twice a week, and clinical conferences every Wednesday.

Lecturers of the Department conduct consultations at the University Clinic.

Advisory work is being carried out to provide legal assistance to doctors in professional matters.
