Historical Reference

The Department of Nervous Diseases was founded in 1966. In 1978, an Angioneurological Center was organized and opened, and it was one of the first and best centers in the former Soviet Union.

In 1994-1998, the Department studied the biorhythmology of patients with various forms of stroke.

Since 1998, the Department is headed by Professor Oleksandr Koziolkin. Under his leadership, the Zaporizhzhia Angioneurological Center was reorganized to improve the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients, the system of stepped care for patients with cerebral catastrophes was improved taking into account the time of "therapeutic possibilities", modern principles of diagnosis and treatment of chronic cerebral circulation at all stages of the disease were developed and implemented into clinical practice along with modern principles of rehabilitation therapy in patients who have suffered a stroke.

Internships, clinical residencies, postgraduate studies and doctoral studies are open at the Department to train specialists in nervous diseases. Graduates of the Department work as neurologists in European countries, the United States and the Middle East.

• Neurology is studied by domestic fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty, majoring in "Medicine" and "Pediatrics";
• Neurology is studied by foreign (including English-speaking) fourth-year students of the International Faculty No. 2, majoring in "Medicine";
• Neurostomatology is studied by fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty, majoring in "Dentistry";
• Neurology with Research Results Evaluation is studied by fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty, majoring in "Technologies of Medical Diagnostics and Treatment";
• Neurology and Neurosurgery for Specific Purposes is studied by fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty, majoring in "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy";
• Topical Issues of Neurology (as elective course) is studied by fifth-year students of the Medical Faculty, majoring in "Medicine" and "Pediatrics";
• Topical Issues of Cerebrovascular Pathology (as elective course) is studied by sixth-year students of the Medical Faculty, majoring in "General Medcine";
• Nervous Diseases is studied by intern neurologists and intern psychiatrists;
• Modern Neurology is studied by postgraduate students.

Educational and Methodical Work

The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. Original lectures for domestic and foreign (including English-speaking) students are given exclusively with the use of modern multimedia technologies.

According to the curriculum, working programs in all disciplines, educational and methodological complexes and syllabi have been created. A bank of test tasks (more than 200 tests) has been created to prepare students to KROK-2 licensing exam.

The Department published 65 manuals for medical HEI students and interns-neurologists with the stamp of the CMC of ZSMPhU.

The Department developed and implemented a differentiated approach to determining the optimal structure and scope of treatment in patients with hemispheric ischemic stroke in acute and early recovery periods, taking into account the individual prognosis of recovery of impaired functions on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of spontaneous bioelectrical activity of brain activity, cerebral hemodynamics, humoral markers of brain tissue damage, markers of neoangiogenesis, vascular remodeling and atherogenesis activity, which significantly improved the results of treatment of this group of patients and helped reduce their disability. Diagnostic measures in patients with the onset of spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage were also improved by developing and implementing highly informative criteria for predicting the course and outcome of acute and recovery periods based on an integrated assessment of the initial level of neurological deficit, severity of structural changes in the brain, the volume of secondary intraventricular hemorrhage, cerebral hemodynamics, functional status of cerebral structures, humoral markers of primary and secondary brain damage as a basis for personalized choice of optimal treatment.

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains close scientific ties with the Research Institute of Neurology, Psychiatry and Narcology of the NAMS of Ukraine (Kharkiv), as well as other domestic and foreign research institutes.

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Diagnostic, treatment and advisory work is performed in the departments of the City Hospital No. 6. The staff of the Department conducts consultations, clinical examinations and current consultations, receptions of specialized patients on a daily basis, and every Wednesday — clinical conferences. Lecturers of the Department consult patients at the University Clinic, City Hospital No. 2 and City Hospital No. 4, conduct scheduled and urgent consultative visits to health care facilities of the city and oblast. Employees of the Department hold weekly consultations at the Outpatient Unit of the University Clinic.
