Historical Reference

The Department was founded in 1984.

Since 2003, the Department is headed by Professor Hennadii Lezhenko.

The main directions of scientific work of the staff of the Department were:

  • Neuroendocrine and Immune Status in Young Children with Thymomegaly.
  • Congenital Toxoplasmosis and Congenital Cytomegalovirus in Young Children.
  • Optimization of Treatment of Vascular Complications of Diabetes Mellitus in Children.
  • Study of Microbiocenosis of Main Biotopes in Children Living in Industrial Region.
  • Diagnosis, Prognosis and Therapy of Cardiovascular Disorders in Children Living in Large Industrial City with Chronic and Recurrent Diseases of Bronchopulmonary System.
  • Activity of Endogenous Antimicrobial Peptides in Children with Acute and Recurrent Respiratory Diseases.

According to the researches results, approaches to the diagnosis of early complications of diabetes have been developed and treatment measures aimed at optimizing the treatment of diabetes have been pathogenetically substantiated; diagnostic and therapeutic measures in obese children have been improved; presence of significant changes in the state of the immune status of young children depending on the ecological living conditions has been identified; it has been proved that prophylactic determination of probiotics and their inclusion in the complex scheme of treatment of children with polymorbid conditions reduces the frequency of general and infectious childhood morbidity; algorithm of diagnostics has been improved and the treatment-and-prophylactic measures of cardiovascular disorders in children with bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis, recurrent bronchitis have been developed.

In 2010, the Department was merged with the Course of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and reorganized into the Department of Hospital Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Due to the needs of the educational process in 2014, the Department of Hospital Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases was reorganized into the Department of Hospital Pediatrics.

Today, the Department of Hospital Pediatrics is the base pediatric department of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University for the training of medical, pediatric and dental doctors. The team consists of experienced lecturers, who have the academic titles of candidates and doctors of sciences. Training in Pediatrics is carried out in clinical residency and postgraduate studies.

The Department is the curator of the units of the Zaporizhzhya Regional Clinical Children's Hospital: Pediatric, Hematological, Endocrinological, Pulmonological, Neonatological, Infant, Diagnostic, Outpatient.

The Department has 3 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 assistants (3 doctors of sciences, 6 candidates of medical sciences, 1 doctor of philosophy).

Educational Disciplines

  • Domestic and foreign fifth-year students of Medical and International Faculties, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", study Neonatology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Hematology.
  • Domestic and foreign sixth-year students of Medical and International Faculties study Pediatrics.
  • Fourth-year students, majoring in "Dentistry", take a course in Pediatrics.

 

Educational and Methodical Work

  • Training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and practical skills control. A bank of test tasks (more than 1,000 tests) has been created for the KROK-2 licensing exams.
  • According to the curriculum, work programs, training complexes, syllabuses for all disciplines have been created. Original lectures for domestic and foreign students are given exclusively with the use of multimedia technologies. Methodical recommendations have been issued and online courses for practical classes in all academic disciplines for domestic and foreign students of Medical and International Faculties have been created.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The main directions of scientific activity of the Department are:

  1. Features of Congenital Carditides.
  2. Activity of Endogenous Antimicrobial Peptides in Children with Acute and Recurrent Respiratory Diseases.
  3. Prediction of Occurrence, Diagnosis and Treatment of Disorders of Musculoskeletal System in Children with Diabetes.

 

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains close scientific relations with the departments of pediatrics of ZMAPE, research institutes of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Tbilisi.

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Employees of the Department consult in the units of the hospital and in the outpatient clinic, where patients are sent from the districts of Zaporizhzhia oblast and some districts of Donetsk oblast.
