Historical Reference
The Department was founded in 1967.
From 1975 to 1983 the bases of the Department were the surgical departments of the Regional Hospital, Zaporizhstal Medical Unit and City Hospital No. 2.
In 1983 a new stage of introduction of modern directions of medical, diagnostic and scientific work has been started at the Department: there has been created new units of Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Angiography, Endoscopy, Resuscitation, Cardiovascular Surgery, as well as Artificial Circulation Laboratory, Immunological Laboratory and Interregional Transplantation Center.
The Department is a unique practical and scientific base for the training of medical and pediatric doctors. Internship, master's degree course, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies and clinical residencies are open at the Department for training professionals in Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery and Transplantology.
Graduates of the Department work as doctors in the USA, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Morocco, Lebanon, and hold high positions in surgical clinics of Ukraine.
For the last 20 years 8 doctoral and 42 candidate dissertations have been defended at the Department.
Educational Disciplines
Abdominal Surgery, Purulent Septic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Transplantology (internship, master's degree course, clinical residency).
Domestic and foreign students (fifth and sixth years) of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", study Abdominal Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery and Basics of Transplantation.
Educational and Methodical Work
The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, practical work at the bedside of patients, work in operating rooms with the opportunity to participate in surgical interventions, as well as the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control.
To prepare students for the KROK-2 and KROK-2 licensing exams, the Department has created a bank of test tasks, which has more than 4,000 tests.
According to the curriculum and the Bologna Declaration, work programs have been created. Original lectures for domestic and foreign students are given exclusively with the use of multimedia technologies. Methodical recommendations for practical classes for domestic and foreign students of medical faculties, as well as textbooks and manuals are issued to help English-speaking students of the International Faculty No. 2 with preparation for practical classes on surgery.
Scientific Directions and Achievements
The Department develops new methods of diagnosis and treatment of arterial and venous pathology and diseases of the abdominal cavity.
Textbooks on vascular pathology and surgical diseases of the abdominal cavity have been published through the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. And through the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Department has published textbooks on chest and abdominal injuries, a manual on surgical diseases, surgical diseases with patients' care, endoscopic and ultrasound examinations of the abdominal cavity. The ZSMPhU methodological committee approved a manual for students on "Sepsis, Situational Problems in Surgery to Prepare for State Exam".
Lectureres of the Department received 56 patents, published more than 1,700 articles in domestic and foreign publications.
Cooperation with Other Institutions
The Department maintains close scientific and practical relations with leading surgical clinics in Ukraine, Russia, USA, Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Japan.
Advisory and Diagnostic Activities
Diagnostic and advisory work is carried out in the Zaporizhia Regional Clinical Hospital, outpatient clinics, University Clinic and in the districts of the Zaporizhzhia oblast. Diagnosis includes new high-tech methods of examination: angiography, laparoscopy, ultrasound duplex scanning and Doppler echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, including the possibility of intraoperative examination, rheovasography, capillaroscopy.
The Cardiovascular Surgery Unit accepts patients with pulmonary embolism, acute coronary syndrome: there are conducted selective thrombolysis and coronary arteries stenting. The Transplant Unit performs 30-35 kidney transplants annually, there also was performed liver transplantation for the first time in Ukraine, as well as simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplantation.
The Angiography Unit performs angiographic examinations, endovascular interventions for hemorrhagic stroke, closure of the heart membrane defect, stenting of arteries.
