Historical Reference

In 1967, a Tuberculosis Course was organized at the Department of Hospital Therapy. The clinical and training base of the cycle was the Komunarskyi Tuberculosis Dispensary of Zaporizhzhia, which had a Dispensary and Inpatient Units (70 beds). In 1974, the Tuberculosis Course acquired the status of an independent course, and in 1976 the it was reorganized into the Department of Tuberculosis.

In 2001, the Department has acquired the status of the Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology.

The Department is a unique clinical and scientific base for the training of medical, pediatric and dental doctors. Internships, Master's degrees course, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies and clinical residencies have been opened at the Department to conduct training in Phthisiology and Pulmonology.

Educational Disciplines

  • Phthisiology:
    • Domestic and foreign (English-speaking, Ukrainian-speaking) students (fourth and sixth years) of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, and International Faculty No. 2: training of specialists in the specialties 7.12010001 "General Medicine", 7.12010002 "Pediatrics".
    • Fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3: training of specialists in the specialty 7.12010005 "Dentistry".
    • Interns in related disciplines.
  • Phtisiology with research results assessment:
    • Third-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 2: Bachelor's degree in specialty 224 "Technologies of Medical Diagnostics and Treatment".
  • Pulmonology and Phthisiology:
    • Interns specializing in "Pulmonology and Phthisiology".
  • Current Issues of Pulmonology:
    • Fourth-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2: training of specialists in specialties 7.12010001 "General Medicine", 7.12010002 "Pediatrics".
  • Modern Pulmonology:
    • Postgraduate PhD students in the specialty 222 "Medicine", specialization "Phthisiology".

 

Educational and Methodical Work

Training of students and interns at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, taking into account the experience of traditional medical fields and the simultaneous use of new medical technologies, educational and methodological aids. A test tasks bank has been created to prepare students for the KROK-2 licensing exam.

According to the curriculum within the credit module system of training, the Department created educational programs in all academic disciplines, taught at the Department. Lectures are given exclusively in the form of presentations using multimedia technologies.

The Department developed and implemented in the educational process 14 online courses for independent work of students and 8 electronic educational and methodical complexes of disciplines, taught at the Department, for domestic and foreign students (fourth and sixth years) of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, and International Faculty No. 2, majoring "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3, majoring in "Dentistry", third-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 2, majoring in "Technologies of Medical Diagnostics and Treatment".

Lecturers of the Department created and printed:

  • 5 textbooks with the stamps of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on Phthisiology for students of higher educational institutions of III-VI levels of accreditation;
  • more than 50 teaching aids and manuals (including those with stamps of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Academic Council of ZSMPhU) for independent work in preparation for practical classes for domestic and foreign (English) students (fourth and sixth courses), etc.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

  • Study of recurrences of pulmonary tuberculosis in a large industrial city in a new epidemiological situation.
  • Immuno-biochemical features of widespread and limited pulmonary tuberculosis in newly diagnosed patients.
  • Improving the efficacy and tolerability of chemotherapy in patients with chemoresistant destructive pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • Study of the dynamics of the state of immunity, establishment of criteria for its violation and development of their timely correction in patients with chemoresistant pulmonary tuberculosis during the intensive phase of treatment.
  • Research of pathogenetic mechanisms of progression of specific process, establishment of criteria of ineffective treatment and development of their timely correction at patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Diagnostic and advisory work is carried out in the departments of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Tuberculosis Dispensary, University Clinic, hospitals of the city and oblast.

Lecturers of the Department conduct outpatient medical and diagnostic consultations in the districts of the oblast, shifts in air medical services in the oblast according to the schedules of Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Tuberculosis Dispensary.

The teaching staff of the department is constantly working to improve the treatment and diagnostic process in clinics, and to implement new methods of treatment and diagnosis. Over the past 10 years, the Department published 28 utility model patents and 14 copyright certificates have been received, 5 methodological recommendations of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, 5 information letters, 20 innovations, included in the Industry Innovations Register of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. All of the above has been implemented in the medical work of tuberculosis institutions in Zaporizhzhia and Zaporizhzhia oblast.
