Historical Reference

The Department was founded in 1975 as the Department of Hospital therapy No. 2. The scientific direction of the Department was the study of the problem of respiratory dysfunction, which allowed to develop new approaches to treatment and prevention.

From 1995 to 2007, the Department implemented modern instrumental and laboratory diagnostic methods in the study of pathogenetic mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases.

In 2007, the Department was renamed into the Department of Internal Medicine No. 3, and since then it is headed by Professor Serhii Dotsenko.

Educational Disciplines

Internal Medicine (modules "Modern Practice of Internal Medicine" and "Emergencies in Clinic of Internal Medicine") — for domestic and foreign sixth-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos.&nbps;1 and 2, majoring in "General Medicine and Pediatrics, including those who graduated from the Medical College.

Occupational Diseases — for domestic and foreign fifth-year students, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics".

Clinical Immunology and Allergology — for domestic and foreign fifth-year students, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", including those who graduated from the Medical College, and for Master's students, majoring in "Laboratory Diagnostics".

Educational and Methodical Work

Training of students at the Department is practice-oriented and based on work at the patient's bedside with the development of clinical thinking methods, modern laboratory and instrumental methods of diagnosis and differential diagnosis of therapeutic diseases, work with hospital medical records, engaging students in shifts in the clinic, reception, emergency care unit and outpatient clinic.

In preparing students at the Department, preference is given to independent work with methodological and informational support of the educational process and the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control.

A computer class has been organized for different types of test control. To prepare for the KROK-2 licensing exams, a bank of test tasks was created with more than 4,000 tests.

In accordance with the requirements of the Bologna Declaration, work programs have been created in all disciplines. Original lectures are taught using multimedia tools. For practical classes, the Department developed didactic materials in the form of packages of educational X-ray images, electrocardiograms, spirograms, laboratory analyzes, etc. Test workshops for practical classes in all disciplines for medical students have been published. A bank of digital copies of educational medical literature was collected to prepare students for practical classes.

Scientific Directions and Achievements

Main scientific directions of the Deaprtment:

• Comorbid diseases in the therapeutic clinic (features of the clinical course, risk factors, biochemical markers, prognostic models, modern approaches to therapy and prevention).
• Diseases of the cardiovascular system (structural and functional properties of blood vessels in hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure), including those associated with other therapeutic diseases.
• Rheumatological diseases (modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis).
• Kidney disease (immunosuppressive therapy of glomerulonephritis according to modern programs).
• Digestive diseases (Helicobacter pylori).
• Pulmonological pathology (features of post-influenza pneumonia, COPD).
• Hematological diseases (features of lesions of internal organs in chronic leukemia).

According to the results of scientific research, more than 60 innovations have been introduced into the practical work of hospitals.

The department has trained 4 doctors of sciences and more than 20 candidates of medical sciences.

Employees of the department published 8 monographs, through the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine: published textbooks on the differential diagnosis of fevers, jaundice, immuno-inflammatory and inflammatory kidney diseases, etc.

The Department has obtained more than 30 patents for inventions and utility models and published more than 700 articles.

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Diagnostic and advisory work is performed in the departments of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital (300 therapeutic beds in Pulmonology, Allergology, Immunology, Nephrology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology and Hematology Units), District Hospital at Zaporizhia-2 station and University Clinic of ZSMPhU.

The Department is a consultative and methodical center for therapy in the Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Employees of the Department, including main specialists of the oblast in pulmonology, rheumatology, nephrology, hematology, consulted more than 31,000 patients from the city and oblast, and made more than 2,500 trips within the oblast.
