Historical Reference
Environmental issues and its impact on public health have always been relevant to the Zaporizhzhia with its strong industrial potential. In order to more effectively study the relationship between environmental pollution and the state of morbidity of the region's inhabitants and to influence these processes in order to improve the situation, the Department of Hygiene was established at Zaporozhye Medical Institute in 1965.
Before that, the institute had a joint department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Hygiene. Later, experienced sanitary doctors who knew the specifics of the national economy of the region were invited to the Department for teaching. The practical material accumulated by sanitary doctors was mainly the basis of research topics.
The scientific and educational subdivision received a new impetus in 1976 with the start of a new research, which has made a significant contribution to the theory and practice of hygienic regulation, development of accelerated methods for regulating chemical harmful impurities in the air of industrial regions. This allowed to substantiate a number of Threshold Limit Value and approximate safe levels of harmful chemical compounds in the air.
In 1995 the Institute of Medical and Environmental Problems (IMEP) was opened, which performs work on social and hygienic monitoring of public health, hygienic regulation of chemical harmful substances in the air, toxicological and hygienic studies of chemicals and materials, used in the national economy with the development, design and approval of toxicological and hygienic passports. The IMEP has accreditation certificates for the right to conduct research work of the Committee for Hygienic Regulation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Since 2008 the department is headed by Associate Professor Anatolii Sievalniev.
For more than half a century, the Department of General Hygiene and Ecology has been actively involved in the training and graduation of doctors, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, cosmetologists and dentists.
