Department of General Hygiene and Ecology

Head of the Department:
Anatolii SIEVALNIEV, Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Honored Doctor of Ukraine. He was awarded a Certificate of Honour of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and a medal "For Development of Zaporizhzhia". From 1991 to 2013 — Chief State Sanitary Doctor of the Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Historical Reference

Environmental issues and its impact on public health have always been relevant to the Zaporizhzhia with its strong industrial potential. In order to more effectively study the relationship between environmental pollution and the state of morbidity of the region's inhabitants and to influence these processes in order to improve the situation, the Department of Hygiene was established at Zaporozhye Medical Institute in 1965.

Before that, the institute had a joint department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Hygiene. Later, experienced sanitary doctors who knew the specifics of the national economy of the region were invited to the Department for teaching. The practical material accumulated by sanitary doctors was mainly the basis of research topics.

The scientific and educational subdivision received a new impetus in 1976 with the start of a new research, which has made a significant contribution to the theory and practice of hygienic regulation, development of accelerated methods for regulating chemical harmful impurities in the air of industrial regions. This allowed to substantiate a number of Threshold Limit Value and approximate safe levels of harmful chemical compounds in the air.

In 1995 the Institute of Medical and Environmental Problems (IMEP) was opened, which performs work on social and hygienic monitoring of public health, hygienic regulation of chemical harmful substances in the air, toxicological and hygienic studies of chemicals and materials, used in the national economy with the development, design and approval of toxicological and hygienic passports. The IMEP has accreditation certificates for the right to conduct research work of the Committee for Hygienic Regulation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Since 2008 the department is headed by Associate Professor Anatolii Sievalniev.

For more than half a century, the Department of General Hygiene and Ecology has been actively involved in the training and graduation of doctors, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, cosmetologists and dentists.

Educational and Methodical Work

The educational process is organized in accordance with the requirements of curricula for disciplines. For students studying in English, a full course of lectures with multimedia presentations is provided.

Every year the educational and methodical material on disciplines is updated in accordance with the curricula and programs.

In accordance with the requirements of the Bologna Declaration, test tasks have been developed to control both content and final modules for students of all courses. A bank of tests has been created to prepare sixth-year students, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", for the KROK-2 licensing exam.

During the practical classes students master the skills of hygienic research of environmental factors.

On the basis of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Laboratory Center, third- and fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 2, majoring in "Technologies of Medical Diagnostics and Treatment", pass their practical training.

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The scientific work of the Department is carried out in the following areas:

  • Forecasting Threshold Limit Value of Harmful Substances in Air Using Mathematical Modeling Based on Short-Term Toxicological Experiments;
  • Hygienic Regulation of Harmful Chemical Substances in Air According to Adaptive Reactions of Organism in Experimental Conditions;
  • Methodological and Methodical Substantiation of Time-Differentiated Threshold Limit Value in Atmospheric Air;
  • Concept of Medical and Environmental Monitoring of Rapid Response of Public Health to Air Pollution;
  • Comprehensive Assessment and Management of Risks to Public Health in Large Industrial City.

In the Committee for Hygienic Regulation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Department is certified for the right to conduct researches on the hygienic justification of harmful substances TLV in the air, as well as toxic and hygienic researches.
