Department of Human Anatomy, Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy

Historical Reference

The Department of Normal Anatomy of ZSMPhU was founded in December 1964.

During the existence of the Department there were proposed methods of joint staining of nerves and glands, staining of glands with the use of ultrasound, modified a number of methods of histochemical study of mucopolysaccharides and enzymes in tissues. Besides that the morphological regularities of protective-adaptive reactions of organs in acute hypoxia, microwave irradiation and alcohol load were determined by histochemical and historadiographic methods. In addition, the Zaporizhia Scientific School of Anatomists was founded.

In 1990–1991, the All-Union School of Young Immunomorphologists and a meeting of the All-Union Problem Commission on Normal Anatomy were held on the basis of the Department.

In 2003 the first scientific-practical conference "Role of Immune, Nervous and Endocrine Systems in Embryogenesis Processes" was held on the basis of the Department. Also in the same year the plenum of the Ukrainian AHET Society (Scientific Society of Anatomists, Histologists, Embryologists and Topographic Anatomists) was held.

Since 2009, the Department has been transformed into the Department of Human Anatomy, Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery.

In 2010, a scientific-practical conference "Thiotriazoline and Its Composite Drugs: Achievements and Prospects" was held with the participation of the Department.

In 2011, a scientific-practical conference "Actual Issues of Morphology" was held.

In 2013, a research work "Lectin Histochemical Characteristics of Morphogenesis of Organs and Tissues in Early Postnatal Period in Norm and Experiment" was completed.

In 2013, the Department was overhauled and renovated. The educational and methodical base of the Department is constantly replenished.

In 2014, the Department celebrated it 50th anniversary, and in this regard during the period from 16 to 18 August 2015, the VI Congress of Anatomists, Histologists, Embryologists and Topographic Anatomists of Ukraine was held.

Since 2015, research work of the Department is focused on "Reactivity of Newborn Organs After Exposure to Antigens and Different Factors in Utero".

In 2016-2017 academic year the staff of the Department has developed an online course "Topographic Anatomy of Head and Neck".

Since August 2017, the Department is headed by Professor Olena Hryhorieva.

In recent years, during the annual All-Ukrainian scientific and practical conference with international participation "Modern Aspects of Medicine and Pharmacy" (for young scientists and students) "Anatomical Drug" and "Anatomical Drawing" competitions are held, which allows to update the catalog of museum drugs.

• Domestic and foreign first- and second-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, as well as International Faculty No. 2, majoring in "Medicine", study Human Anatomy.
• First-year Bachelor students, majoring in "Laboratory Diagnostics", study Human Anatomy.
• Domestic and foreign first-year students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty, majoring in "Pharmacy" (full-time and part-time), study Human Anatomy.
• Domestic and foreign first-year students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty, majoring in "Technology of Perfume-Cosmetic Preparations", study Human Anatomy.
• Domestic and foreign first-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3, majoring in "Dentistry", study Human Anatomy.
• Domestic and foreign first-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3, majoring in "Dentistry", "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy", study Human Anatomy.
• Domestic and foreign second- and third-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1, 2 and 3, as well as International Faculty No. 2, majoring in "Medicine", "Dentistry", study Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy.

Educational and Methodical Work

Training of students at the Department is based on the principles of credit-transfer system: providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process and independent work of students; introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. A bank of test tasks (about 2,000) has been created for the KROK-1 licensing exams.

According to the curriculum of the credit transfer system, working programs in all disciplines have been created. Original lectures are given using multimedia technologies. Methodical recommendations and electronic information guide for students in Human Anatomy for medical and pharmaceutical faculties, as well as methodical recommendations for practical classes in Human Anatomy for students, majoring in "Dentistry", a textbook on Operative Surgery, Clinical and Topographic Anatomy for second- and third-year students, majoring in 222 "Medicine", 228 "Pediatrics", 221 "Dentistry".

Scientific Directions and Achievements

Areas of scientific work of the Department are:

• Regularities of Morphogenesis of Lymphoid and Internal Organs Under Normal Conditions During Immunization and Formation of Immunological Tolerance.
• Lectin Histochemical Characteristics of Morphogenesis of Organs and Tissues in Early Postnatal Period under normal and experimental conditions.
• Study of Embryotoxic Effects of Drugs.
• Reactivity of Newborn Organs After Exposure to Antigens and Different Factors in Utero.

6 doctoral and 36 candidate dissertations were defended.

The seminar of young scientists "Modern Problems of Morphology" functions at the Department.

Employees of the Department conduct comprehensive research with pharmaceutical and clinical departments (Pediatrics, Urology, Oncology, Eye Diseases, Dentistry, etc.) and implement histochemical methods for detecting lectins and immunomorphological research methods.

An effective result of comprehensive research was the development, study and implementation of the first domestic drug — Tiotriazolin. The concept of morphofunctional manifestations of thymomegaly as an immunological deficiency was developed and formed the basis of the modern classification of thymomegaly. The regularities of the structure of lymphoid tissue of the placenta and its role in the normal course of pregnancy and childbirth have been established.

Employees of the Department have published more than 1,000 scientific publications in domestic and foreign journals, received more than 60 patents for inventions, published 8 monographs, 14 manuals and recommendations.

Cooperation with Other Institutions

Joint research is being conducted with the Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy, NVO Farmatron, and the International Academy of Integrative Anthropology.
