Historical Reference

The Department was established in August 2008 by reorganizing the Department of Physical Education and Health with a course of Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy.

The Department of Physical Education and Health was established in 1959, when the Odessa Pharmaceutical Institute was transferred to Zaporizhzhia. In 1965, the Pharmaceutical Institute was renamed the Medical Institute and a course of Medical Control and Physical Therapy was established at the Department of Physical Education.

In 1990, Professor Yevhen Mykhaliuk was admitted to the course. In 1998 he became the Head of the course of Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy, and later — the Department of Physical Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Physical Education and Health. Having the highest qualification category Professor Mykhaliuk headed the Federation of Sports Medicine of Zaporizhzhia region for more than 20 years, and since 2002 he has been the chairman of the Board of the Association of Specialists in Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine.

On March 14, 2022, on the competition basis, Professor Eduard Doroshenko was elected for the position of the Head of the department.

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The teaching staff of the Department studies the problems of diagnosis of borderline and pathological states at maximum physical activity in Olympic and professional sports, issues of physical rehabilitation of athletes in cyclic, acyclic, game and complex coordination sports and martial arts, issues of optimization of physical condition of ZSMPhU students through physical education and sports, topical issues of physical therapy and occupational therapy of different segments of the population.

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

On the basis of the Medical Rehabilitation and Prevention Center of the University Clinic of ZSMPhU, employees of the Department conduct preventive medical examinations of students and staff, provide assistance and advice to people engaged in physical education and sports, leading athletes and coaches of the city, oblast, Ukraine, and more. The teaching staff of the Department takes an active part in the work of the Ukrainian Association of Physical Therapy and the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC).

• Sports Facility of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, where gyms are located. Nearby on the campus there is a sports ground with artificial turf for playing mini-football and a sports ground with weight machines in the open air.
