Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine

The Department is located on the second floor of the building No. 1 of the Regional Medical Center for Human Reproduction.

Nataliia AVRAMENKO, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Science in Public Administration, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Obstetrician-Gynecologist of the highest category.

 

Historical Reference

In 2003, the educational process for sixth-year medical students was started on the basis of the Regional Medical Center for Human Reproduction. Since that time teaching readings on "Infertile Marriage" and "Family Planning and Contraception" have been conducted by Professor Nataliia Avramenko, while a thematic course "Gynecology of Children and Adolescents" for students of pediatric groups — by Assistant Olena Kabachenko, who was trained in advanced training courses "Pediatric Gynecology". Consultative reception of gynecological patients and pregnant women on the basis of the Regional Medical Center for Human Reproduction has been led by Associate Professor Dmytro Barkovskyi.

The center as a specialized medical-diagnostic, consultative and methodical medical institution, became a full-fledged clinical base and basis for the organization of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine in July 2011.

Educational and Methodical Work

The following students study at the Department:

  • Fifth- and sixth-year students of Medical and International faculties in specialties "Medical Business" and "Pediatrics", studying "Obstetrics and Gynecology" and "Pediatric Gynecology";
  • Fourth year students of Medical and International faculties in specialties "Medical Business" and "Pediatrics", studying "Medical Genetics" and "Urology" ("Reproductive Andrology" content module);
  • Doctors (obstetricians-gynecologists, family practitioners, laboratory doctors, urologists, andrologists, ultrasound doctors), improving their skills in thematic improvement courses.

In order to ensure the educational process a computer class (12 work seats) was opened and used at the Department. It is used to conduct final module tests, as well as to prepare students for the KROK-2 licensing exam. The databank of test tasks has more than 1,500 tests.

Practical classes combine the active work of students at the bedside, in operating rooms, endoscopic rooms, laboratories of the center and ultrasound rooms.

Thanks to modern video equipment in operating rooms and study rooms, each student can watch the most interesting stages of surgery.

The modern media center allows to consult patients and to hold video conferences with different regions of the oblast.

Employees of the Department issued: 25 manuals, 6 of them — stamped by the Ministry of Health; 1 monograph; 3 patents; 1 methodical recommendations; 39 published articles in total, including 12 in professional publications; 30 published abstracts and reports in total.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

  • Optimization and improvement of qualified medical care for couples suffering from infertility.
  • Improving the organization of medical care for adolescents for the early diagnosis of disorders of the reproductive system, as one of the measures to prevent infertility.
  • Study of the state of the woman's neuroimmunoendocrine system during pregnancy and non-pregnancy periods in the absence and presence of extragenital pathology.
  • Study of the influence of the main complex of human histocompatibility (HLA-system) on the course of pregnancy and development of an algorithm for predicting pregnancy complications based on changes in the neuroimmunoendocrine system of the pregnant woman and depending on the alleles of the HLA system.
  • Development of new approaches to family planning techniques and identification of contraceptives features at different ages.
  • A contribution was made to the implementation of the Targeted Comprehensive Program of Genetic Monitoring in Ukraine: within the Zaporizhzhia oblast, the system of providing prenatal ultrasound care, which at that time had no analogues in Ukraine, was substantiated and implemented into medical practice. The scientific and practical significance of the organizational and preventive measures is to create stages and sequence of medical and genetic care, form a database of prenatally diagnosed congenital pathology, based on which the environmental factors influence on pregnancy in a large industrial center was substantiated.
  • For the first time in Zaporizhzhia oblast, in vitro fertilization (IVF method) was introduced and a number of modern gynecological surgical interventions were performed:
    • office hysteroscopy;
    • laparoscopic conservative myomectomy;
    • conservative myomectomy with vaginal access;
    • sacrospinal colposuspesion in vaginal prolapse after hysterectomy and in the treatment of uterine prolapse;
    • TVT-O operation in the presence of stress urinary incontinence in women;
    • surgical treatment of female genital prolapse using synthetic materials (vaginal and abdominal access).

 

Main Therapeutic Activities

  • Ultrasound diagnostics in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Complementary reproductive technologies (in vitro fertilization, etc.).
  • Endoscopic methods of diagnosis and treatment in gynecology (laparoscopy; office and medical-diagnostic hysteroscopy).
  • Vaginal surgery (hysterectomy; conservative vaginal access myomectomy; treatment of pelvic prolapse, including the use of synthetic materials).
  • Urogynecology (including treatment of stress urinary incontinence).
  • Gynecological and andrological diseases of children and adolescents.
  • Modern aspects of andrology and treatment of male infertility.
  • Issue of early aging in men.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Prenatal diagnostics and medical and genetic counseling: the Regional Prenatal Commission works on the basis of the Human Reproduction Center. Employees of the Department are actively consulting.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the fetoplacental complex.
  • Metabolic syndrome in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Modern aspects of diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis.

The Department maintains close ties with:

  • Department of Endovascular Surgery of the Center for Extreme Medicine and Ambulance of Zaporizhzhia;
  • National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsia;
  • Military Medical Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vinnytsia;
  • Kharkiv National Medical University;
  • Institute of Reproductive Medicine, Kyiv.

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Consultative work is carried out on the basis of the Regional Medical Center of Human Reproduction.

In 2018, a Media Center was established at the Department. It hosts conferences every Thursday, involving practitioners from all regions of the oblast.

Employees of the Department for the first time in the Zaporizhzhia oblast introduced in vitro fertilization (IVF method) and performed a number of modern gynecological surgeries.

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine of the FPE continues to improve the quality of medical care for the population of Zaporizhzhia oblast and the city of Zaporizhzhia.

Every year, 1,200 married couples, who cannot get pregnant on their own, apply to the Regional Medical Center of Human Reproduction. After diagnosis and/or treatment, pregnancy occurs in half of families.

Annually, the center performs 1,500 or more operations, half of which are performed by employees of the Department.
