Zaporizhzhia Experience at the Global Level

Zaporizhzhia Experience at the Global Level

Scientific research conducted at Zaporizhzhia State Medical University was presented at one of the most authoritative international scientific forums in military medicine and military surgery — the Military Surgical Science Symposium 2026, held in London.

The symposium, organized by the Academic Department of Surgery and Trauma at the Royal College of Surgeons of England with the support of the Conflict Wound Research Network (CWRN), brought together leading military surgeons, researchers, and clinicians from the United Kingdom, the United States, Ukraine, and other countries around the world. The participants discussed modern approaches to combat trauma treatment and combat injuries in armed conflicts, as well as medical care delivery in conflict settings.

Following a competitive selection process, three presentations by a Ukrainian interdisciplinary research group were included in the forum's scientific program. The group includes Professor Yurii Mikheiev, a faculty member of the Department of Surgery No. 2 at ZSMPhU. The presentations are based on Ukraine’s unique experience in treating combat injuries gained during the full-scale war.

The international audience showed particular interest in research focused on the use of laparoscopic technologies in the management of combat-related abdominal injuries, as well as modern approaches to treating carotid artery damage in Ukrainian field hospitals. The findings presented have significant practical value for improving global standards of medical care for wounded patients.

Professor Mikheiev’s expertise in these areas is truly unique. He has repeatedly shared this experience with readers of the Zaporizhzhia Medical Journal and with postgraduate medical trainees, who have the opportunity to study under a leading specialist shaping the modern practice of military surgery.
The Military Surgical Science Symposium 2026 became another important platform for sharing  unique medical experience, a testament to the high scientific potential of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, and contributing to the development of international cooperation with leading medical and research institutions worldwide.
