European Experience in Family Medicine

European Experience in Family Medicine

Thanks to the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Development of Medical Education”, the university library has been enriched with copies of the publication “Family Medicine”.
The Ukrainian edition of this unique publication is an adapted version of the English-language textbook, which is recommended for senior medical students and interns in European universities. The textbook highlights the specific features and differences of Ukraine’s primary healthcare system, grounded in the principles of family medicine.
The chapters dedicated to the clinical aspects of a family doctor’s practice are organised according to the syndromic approach—a method widely used in Western primary healthcare systems. The sections focusing on organisational issues of family medicine highlight key political, economic, educational, financial, and sociocultural aspects of Ukraine’s system. They also outline the core competencies, rights, and responsibilities of the family physician within the framework of modern healthcare reform.
Scholars from Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University also contributed to this fundamental edition. Professor Nataliia Mykhailovska, Head of the Department of General Practice—Family Medicine and Internal Diseases, and Dr. Iryna Stetsiuk, PhD and Assistant Professor of the same department, authored the chapter, "Prescription of Medicines in Medicine."
This chapter explores one of the most crucial and frequent aspects of patient care—the prescription of medicines. The authors provide practical examples of a family physician’s decision-making in cooperation with patients, analyse the principles of medication prescription, offer guidelines for examinations, discuss dosage considerations, and describe possible side effects.
The textbook is well-structured and rich in clinical cases, analyses, and examples of the most common pathologies encountered in family practice. It presents both the strengths and challenges of family medicine and suggests modern approaches to its improvement and optimisation.
For Ukrainian family physicians, the book provides an opportunity to compare their practice with European experience, while students preparing for clinical work can draw on best practices and standards of European family medicine presented in this new edition.
