The Clinical Communication Club at the Department of Foreign Languages of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University held an international webinar titled “From Analysis to Practice – Using Conversation Analysis to Shape National Health Policy and Train Healthcare Professionals: Insights from the United Kingdom,” featuring Dr. Charlotte Albury from the University of Oxford.
In her presentation, Dr. Albury shared the results of a six-year research project, TalkWeL, which analyzed hundreds of authentic clinical conversations between doctors and patients. The study identified effective communication strategies used during consultations with patients dealing with overweight and obesity. Online resources for primary care specialists were developed based on the collected data. They became part of national training programs and clinical guidelines in the United Kingdom.
During the webinar, Dr. Albury shared her experience and practical findings with medical students, faculty members, and young researchers from ZSMPhU. The participants of the discussion, which was moderated by Professor Alla Kulichenko and Associate Professor Liliia Bespala, actively engaged with the presentation and asked the speaker a number of interesting questions.
Dr. Albury’s work is an example of how academic research in communication can directly influence the development of clinical practice and enhance its effectiveness.
