The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University (ZSMPhU) has conducted exceptional continuous professional development (CPD) events for practicing physicians from the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital and the 5th City Emergency and Ambulance Hospital. It was the masterclass on Point of Care Ultrasonography (POCUS)—bedside Echocardiography.
The department head, Professor Serhii Vorotyntsev, invited Dr. Roma Stevens, MD, FCCM, a Professor at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (North Chicago, Illinois, USA), colleagues from Dnipro State Medical University, Daria Krishtafor and Olha Pylypenko, and leading anesthesiologists from medical institutions in Zaporizhzhia to take part in organizing these advanced training sessions.
Over four days, participants attended expert-led lectures covering ultrasound physics and basic principles, standard cardiac imaging, LV and RV function, volume status (IVC), lung ultrasound, e-FAST protocol, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) diagnosis, right ventricular function and pulmonary embolism, and advanced ultrasound assessment of LV and RV function. However, the greatest impact came from hands-on training sessions, which included parasternal, apical, and subcostal views, IVC imaging and M-mode measurements, lung ultrasound, pneumothorax in 2D and M-mode, e-FAST, TAPSE, MAPSE assessment, lower limb vein examination for DVT, right IJ vein cannulation, and case discussions with a focus on POCUS for shock diagnosis and clinical integration of ultrasound findings.
The event also featured an exclusive lecture by Professor Roma Stevens, who shared his expertise on X-ray interpretation for anesthesiologists. His insights were highly valued by university faculty, interns, and practicing physicians. In return, Professor Stevens had the opportunity to explore the university’s state-of-the-art educational, research, and clinical training center.
In June, the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at ZSMPhU, in collaboration with Professor Roma Stevens, will host another highly anticipated masterclass—this time focusing on Respiratory Therapy in the ICU. Don’t miss your chance to enhance your skills with world-class experts!
