Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University has integrated the Body Interact Virtual Patient Simulator into its curriculum for Ukrainian and international students.
International students studying at the Berehove campus of ZSMPhU in Zakarpattia often work with the simulator. This advanced technology is an essential part of the training as it offers real-case scenarios in different fields of medical practice, such as diseases of the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, and many others, in patients of various ages.
During one of the recent classes, 3rd year learners explored and worked on pediatric cases. The students practiced handling emergencies where children were unconscious or unable to communicate their symptoms. These situations taught them to make quick, confident decisions using diagnostic tools while applying their medical knowledge effectively.
A useful option while working in the program was to call a professional consultant. During the student's confusion or many attempts to help a patient in a difficult condition and the lack of the desired effect, it was the consultant who reduced the time to receive valuable advice. This option helped me develop a useful skill—the ability to work in a team and not neglect the experience of senior colleagues.
The Virtual Patient also helped 3rd-year students develop their knowledge of medication-related aspects of treatment. Moreover, the ability to choose different scenarios, and algorithms, and retake training provided the opportunity to remember classes on medication, and their methods of administration, and overcome polypharmacy. It is also a good basis for further study of medicine in senior years with a full understanding and use of theoretical knowledge.
The Body Interact system covers not only medical training. It also encourages interdisciplinary learning, helping students develop skills in psychology, communication, and technology. This way they not only learn how to diagnose and treat patients but also how to communicate effectively with patients and their families in any stressful situations.
Teachers actively support each student. It helps the latter to build the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the healthcare field, which is always changing.
