Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University's application has been selected for cancer prevention research project funding. The project is focused on screening and early detection of the disease, which ZSMPhU is conducting together with the Karolinska Institute (Sweden).
The International Union Against Cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, as well as the Netherlands, Swedish, and Danish Cancer Societies provide funding, making the program completely free for patients. 15 projects from different European countries participated in the competitive selection. An independent committee of international experts evaluated them and selected only three that can significantly accelerate the implementation of cancer prevention strategies.
The project "Self-sampling for human papillomavirus to strengthen cervical screening during the war in Ukraine", submitted by scientists of ZSMPhU and Swedish colleagues, will implement self-sampling of HPV in Ukraine, which is especially important considering the difficult circumstances created by the ongoing conflict. The study offers women an alternative to traditional clinic screenings by allowing them to collect samples at home, which can then be sent to a lab for analysis. This approach is highly valuable in conflict zones, where access to healthcare facilities may be limited and women may be unable or unwilling to attend clinics due to security concerns.
